LOL everybody on Facebook live my name is Josh Oakes we have some really exciting news for you here today savesmart social.com is now social.com we shortened our domain name and we're so pumped today to be bringing you some tips from some absolute experts today's topic is really cool one that's near and dear to my heart it's all about dialogue and it's all about going back to school which is the most stressful time I have three awesome experts here today they're going to talk to us about how to make it the least stressful possible so that is productive and you can actually have fun hopefully so we're I'm having a good time chatting with these three and they have some turn chips that are tactical and practical so first we're going to jump over to Whitney Whitney the school counselor to middle school and Whitney's got a tip on how open dialogue with people going back to school Whitney tell us a little bit how we can set expectations who is all day long so I think one of the best chips for going back to school with your teens is setting expectation digital expectations to son when's we want to back off as parents let their teeth you know let our teams do their thing when school starts but they need you they need you to help them manage their homework socialize but they also need you to help them manage their Digital Life so talk to your teen what do you want that phone or internet usage to look like when they go back to school what's your time frame what can they use what can they not use maybe even you know create a contract with your student this is what we're going to do this year because you're going back to school we need to set some boundaries I think that is so important as we begin this whole back-to-school season we need to set those expectations with student in real-time have waiting have that conversation before the year even start so that you're starting on the right foot now we're over to Mercedes Mercedes is awesome Mercedes to Moody oh and Mercedes is quite the expert on Shane proof parenting she's been are digital citizenship conference as has Whitney and Mercedes you talk a little bit about staying curious and being open can you talk to his more about that and dive into what does what mean and how can a parent do that with your tween yeah I think this is probably the best time and a child's life to start being curious and being open I know that sometimes parents can get overwhelmed with all of the news in the research and oceans and what else and what I really challenged my parents to do is to lay aside their assumptions of what a Queen will do and really start to ask questions and be curious about what their tween is doing the person they have in their home and also when you're being open listen to the full story don't make judgments right away especially when it comes to why they didn't do a certain assignment or why they decide to make that decision with a group of peers really be open really listen so you can get a better sense of how your child is processing these issues and you can have a better sense of how to guide them through those issues love that that's super helpful and it's not you working against the kid it's you working with as a family together that's great next were over to Walter Walter Duncan is from boss Massachusetts with an ed-tech company Walter talk to us about how you have an interesting perspective which I think is great cuz it's 6s Downstream you want us to get SATA from the teacher a how do we do that and how does it benefit us and I'm also a certified middle school English teacher by the way you want to speak to this you don't win back to school starts we have that back to school night all our teachers and parents come together we shake hands that is a great place our parents are between coming into the end of that Middle School experience or or coming into tweener to connect with the teacher and there are two types of data that the teacher capturing from your students in that class they should be checking for understanding and they do that sometimes with exit ticket sometimes it's verbal chatting that's the way the teacher knows on a daily basis how the student is doing in that lesson in that unit and then there's another type of date of its captured more school-wide and that's common Benchmark in formative assessments that are given to give down to the detail information about what specific areas your child is stuck as struggling which end in this is so important because the rigor increases significantly brought children when they make that move from elementary to middle school then we want to be able to what then we can do that but simply asking please can you share with me this day too so I can Target the tutoring that or the extra good I can bring it maybe I've got an uncle who's great engineer he's really good concept because if the students keep going and don't Master these early Concepts it's more difficult later on to build upon them and as a parent you got a hand in making sure as long as you're willing to connect listen to and speak with the teacher that's very wise and great advice I love it all right now we're on the rapid fire round I don't want to talk I call this round the I heard when people are cocktail is and we're talking about what we do and people go I heard you can change your username and call just can't find your I heard that as long as you have this say have your kid is fine and you can Outsource the parenting right or I'll giggling at that what are some frequently at misconceptions of parents out of there like I Whitney were going to start with you cuz you have one that's kind of interesting I'll let you go okay so when your team gets to middle all of the parents will I heard they can do this all on their own I heard the school doesn't want me around anymore because they're out of elementary school and there's place for a parent on the junior high campus and that is totally wrong parents we want you and your kids need you believe it or not the kids that have you know zero involvement missed it they come in and you know I'm a counselor they talk to me they come in they want boundaries they want communication with their parents so do the hard thing they involve just like Mercedes the saying you know Beach serious ask them questions to know their friends get to know the apps that they're using whatever it is they involved put on that school campus Like Walter was saying talk to those teachers they need you now more than ever because they are faced with real life decisions now things are going to pack them for the long-term starting now so you have to be involved it at this point in life and schools we want you here we want you involved awesome very very wise I love that I just one little side note to lot of parents will tell me after our parent night talks hey I don't have the passcode to my kids phone it's it's my kids that's their privacy parents I'm just going to tell it to you how it is cuz I can't really get let go or fired this is what parents want to hear you do you bought a car for your kids would you have the right and the obligation to have a set of keys to a parents always not their heads if you would you want to make sure that that car wasn't killing how many ounce are hurting your child absolutely right would you have the right to look through the trunk of that vehicle absolutely right well this is this is a assertion $800 Ferrari that you're buying for your so please know the passcode please have a healthy dialogue please don't try and Outsource your parenting to a safety app no safety up can't really do what you can so all right now we're over to Mercedes Mercedes talk to us about the I heard and what may be misconceptions parents have yeah yeah I think I'd middle school because of Car special arboriculture that I heard is I heard that I really need to focus on my kids academics and get to a good high school and then get into a good college and why I feel like yes you do activate very important in middle school I also want to alert him to the fact that their emotional and mental health is just as important as an academic health and so when you see your children grades or assignments take a nosedive don't immediately focus on tutoring or merely focus on getting them their homework and getting those extra credit really begin to also look at what's going on with emotionally what's going on in their peer group what's going on with puberty a lot of kids start puberty and that's an amazingly you know exciting time of hormones and growth and development definitely want a yes focus on their academics but also if you see anything any discrepancies you definitely also my check in with how they're doing emotionally how they're doing mentally how they're how do the pressures of being a tween with being on a campus with mixed age kids now having six classes and six different teachers to deal with six different groups of kids Saya with all day do you want to kind of have this even balance of being as mindful about their emotional mental health as you are about their academics really was I love that all right back over to Walter Walter hey Walter what's an I heard that you hear from people I got a little bit though this idea that when those children come in and 5th grade they are one size and by the time they're eighth grade it's like they're in a whole different even body that much transfer send that little time must be so crazy for them I forget I'm so old my I heard is I heard Miss Juilliard is the meanest teacher ever ever ever so me and kids will be saying this and it gives us an opportunity as parents to make sure that we connect with Miss Juilliard and all of the other teachers not just win a Pisces arrived not just when there's three detention slips for tardies no but we are able to establish what relationship healthy and there's a two-way dialogue is watching out for our own child knows we Turner and then were able better to handle those inevitable moment surprise East that make up the life of a middle schooler because those crises come we help our children face them they grow through the process on their journey to adulthood that's great I love that early and often and being there for the teacher instead of just Christ good I love that alright so just a little side note this back-to-school season we at smart social.com are teaching Snapchat for parents we're going to parents up to speed on all the apps at the kids are into his parents it is not a valid answer to say oh I'm not technically inclined or I'm not good technology now is the time to be where your kids are at and to understand Snapchat know if your kids are normal they're probably saying Mom I don't want it to stop it I don't want to show you how this where can I get frustrated very normal that's why we're here to teach you it's called parent University
