The Safe Environment Program was established by the Archdiocese of Seattle in an effort to protect children and young people and to establish norms for those working with them, whether in school, parishes, or clubs.
It is the policy of the Archdiocese, as well St. Anthony School, to require all staff and volunteers to complete one three hour Safe Environment session entitled Protecting God's Children and a background check. The class need only be taken once. The background check will be valid for three years. When it is time to renew your background check, you will be required to take an online refresher Safe Environment class. This can be taken at your own convenience from your home computer. It takes about 45 minutes.
Any volunteer that is:
* Working in the Classroom
* Assisting at Lunch, during Recess, or at BASS
* Teaching an after school class
* Running a club
* Driving on a Field Trip
is required to be up to date with Safe Environment classes and have a current background check.
Classes are held at different parishes throughout the Archdiocese and you may sign up to take a class at any parish or school. You must submit your background check information and pre-register for the three hour foundation class at www.virtusonline.org.
For questions please contact the Safe Environment Office at (206) 274-3188.
If you have taken Called to Protect for Ministries and online refresher classes in previous years, your profile should have carried over to the VIRTUS database and you are compliant until your background check expires. There is no longer a yearly online refresher class requirement. You will only be required to take an online refresher class when your background check expires.
